About the project
Bhutan stands on unique geophysical characteristics and is located on one of the most seismically active zones in the world. Further, Bhutan is prone to multiple natural hazards like Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), floods, flash floods, fire, and landslides.
The context of recent geophysical and hydro-meteorological disasters underscore the importance of regulatory measures such as safe building practices, urban planning, building codes and by-laws as well as need for greater awareness and technical knowhow with regard to building construction and conservation of cultural monuments.
In view of vulnerabilities highlighted by recent disasters, it is important to take necessary steps to disseminate information/guidelines on safe construction technology.
The objectives of the project are to:
- Strengthen skills and institutional capacities for disaster and climate resilient construction
- Demonstrate seismic strengthening and safe construction
- Develop methodologies to assess vulnerability of existing housing stock
- Knowledge management and networking
- Successful implementation of the Bhutan National Recovery and Reconstruction Plan 2011-2016 which incorporates earthquake resilient features and techniques in the reconstruction of rural homes.
