Economic impact of climate change in Montenegro

Climate change, in one way or another, affects the quantity and quality of environmental services that humans use both to produce goods and services, and to “enjoy life”. These physical impacts make their way into markets for goods and services and everyday life. Over the past years, the Government of Montenegro has launched a set of policy initiatives that target important sectors for economic development, while trying to balance environmental and economic objectives. In this process, there is a strong need for Montenegro to redevelop the analytical and institutional capacity to manage its natural resources in new way.

Highlights

  • Identifies the data and state-of-the-art models and methods needed to estimate the economic impacts of climate change and the benefits and costs of adaptation in agriculture and forests, tourism, water resources and human health in Montenegro.

  • Assesses the extent of the capacity in-country to develop and apply these data, models and methods to Montenegro’s situation.

  • Provides some preliminary estimates of the economic value of the physical impacts that were identified in the First National Communication.

  • Provides recommendations to improve capacities for estimation of the economic impacts of climate change and the benefits and costs of adaptation in Montenegro.
