We also provide vocational trainings, support small businesses and help encourage green design ideas in the overall urban development.

  • Biodiversity Strategy and Action PlanBiodiversity Strategy and Action PlanUNDP supports the Government of Montenegro in its efforts to achieve better planning, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity potentials. We provide expert support for the revision of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan so that they ensure achievement of the set goals.

  • Coastal area management Coastal area management The coastal area of Montenegro is a region with high development potential, but also with the pronounced pressures on natural resources. In order to achieve sustainable development of this region, UNDP supports implementation of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Protocol and helps raise awareness of the complexity and fragility of the coastal area ecosystems.

  • Environmental indicatorsEnvironmental indicatorsThe project aims to develop national capacities to collect and analyze data and information against the metrics of global environmental indicators, and integrate these within national sustainable development and environmental decision-making processes.

  • Strengthening sustainability of protected areasStrengthening sustainability of protected areasUNDP helps develop institutional capacities in Montenegro to design, plan and manage a more representative system of protected areas. The project will assist in mitigating the current biodiversity threats in protected areas, and will aim at extending the protection status by at least 21,000 ha and creating a new Marine Protected Area.

  • Financial sustainability of protected areasFinancial sustainability of protected areasIt is estimated that the total funding for protected areas is at least 50% below what is required for its effective management. With the planned expansion of the protected area system, this funding gap is expected to increase even further. Hence, UNDP is finding ways to raise the capital needed to effectively manage Montenegro’s expanding protected area system.

  • Second National Communication on Climate ChangeSecond National Communication on Climate ChangeThis project aims to enable Montenegro to prepare, produce and disseminate its Second National Communication (SNC) on Climate Change, under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The SNC will update and strengthen information provided regarding greenhouse gas inventories, climate change mitigation, vulnerability and adaptation.

  • Support to spatial planningSupport to spatial planningFor 7 years now, UNDP has been assisting the Government of Montenegro to better integrate sustainable development principles into the processes of spatial planning, to legalize informal settlements and to improve enforcement of the relevant legislation.

This is why UNDP helps Montenegro strengthen national focus on disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.

  • Development of ICT for outdoor destinations Development of ICT for outdoor destinations The project will stimulate local economy in the cross-border area through bringing together private and public sector in the field of tourism and leveraging new technologies to design user-centric tourism services.

  • Towards carbon neutral tourismTowards carbon neutral tourismMain project objective is to reduce GHG emissions from Montenegro’s tourism by: promoting adoption of low-carbon policies and regulation; establishing sustainable financing mechanisms, and supporting design and implementation of flagship investment in low-carbon tourism infrastructure.
