Beautiful Cetinje: Bringing parks back to life
Old Royal Capital of Cetinje is historical and honorary capital of Montenegro and the official residence of the President of the country. With its rich cultural and natural heritage, this picturesque little town is one of the main tourist attractions. In order to support economic revitalization, UNDP through the Centre of Sustainable Development implements Beautiful Cetinje project – focusing on urban reconstruction of its cultural heritage while making it energy efficient.
After reconstruction of the main square and strategic streets, and after retrofitting a number of buildings of historical and cultural value, the project team is now going a step further to make Cetinje even more beautiful. Namely, we are now looking into possibilities of bringing two main parks back to life. For that purpose, UNDP contracted a local company to develop a main design of reconstruction of the Njegoš Park and the Park of 13 July.
The vision of this design is to create an environment fit for recreation, relaxation and play activities for all ages - seniors, adults, kids and youth. The aim is to conserve and enhance the natural and built environment, historic landscape and biodiversity of the parks for the benefit of diverse visitors, as well as for the future generations. The design envisages refurbishment and conservation measures, revival of landscaping and planting new gardens, but it also introduces new services and facilities, such as: tennis and basketball court, ice skating rink, chess court, winery, amenities for open space exhibitions, painting and photography courses, literary corners, concert stage, puppet theatre, solar panel “strawberry tree” to power cell phones and wi-fi network, bicycle parking, etc. It is also important to mention that all facilities and services will be accessible for people with disabilities.
